Cold calling and in-person prospecting get dismissed by modern marketers, but field sales teams still rely on it for a reason: it works when done right.
First, do your homework. Know something about the business before you call or knock. Generic pitches get rejected instantly.
Second, lead with curiosity, not your pitch. Ask questions about their business, their challenges, and their current approach. People engage with genuine interest.
Third, have a clear objective for the first touch. You're not selling; you're qualifying and building rapport. "Can we schedule 15 minutes next week?" is better than a 30-minute pitch.
Fourth, time your outreach. Tuesday through Thursday, 9-11 AM or 2-4 PM are typically best. Avoid Mondays (chaos) and Fridays (checked out).
Fifth, follow up consistently. One call doesn't close deals. A sequence of touches—phone, email, in-person—builds momentum.
Finally, track what works. Which approaches convert? Which industries are most receptive? Which objections do you hear? Use that data to refine your technique.
Field sales still close deals because human connection still matters. Master cold outreach and you'll build a sustainable pipeline.
